In recent years, many states across America and over 100 school districts have enacted some type of ban on instructional school material. PEN America, a leading organization protecting human rights and freedom of expression, recorded more book bans during the fall semester of 2022, than in each of the prior two semesters. PEN America also cites a 2022 American Library Poll, finding that over 70% of parents oppose book banning
In response, last year I authored AB 1078 establishing policies to prevent the banning and censorship of books in our public schools. Specifically, the bill would prohibit any censorship or removal of books, instructional materials, or curriculum resource that state law requires be reflected in instructional materials.
Additionally, last year I secured a budget allocation of $1 Million to the Inland Empire Community Foundation. The Foundation’s purpose is to provide funding to nonprofit organizations in the Inland Empire. Specifically, the foundation supports organizations that are doing vital work in health and human services, support to children and families, arts and culture, education – and for civic and environment benefit.
Fostering an inclusive environment is a top priority. I fought to stop the erasure of history and free speech (ending the book ban) and secured funding for nonprofit organizations. This is just a small step toward a brighter future. Let’s keep working together to build stronger communities.
