Sacramento — AB 1079, authored by Assemblymember Dr. Corey Jackson, has passed both the California State Senate and the California State Assembly, and is now headed to the Governor's desk for signature. This groundbreaking bill, which has been met with resounding support, is set to revolutionize the state's approach to combating hate crimes.
AB 1079 establishes the Hate Crimes Intervention Program within the State Department of Public Health, creating a vital bridge between government agencies, community leaders, and organizations in communities most affected by hate crimes. By implementing evidence-based community interventions, this program will provide tangible support where it's needed most.
AB 1079 doesn’t stop there. It also empowers the Civil Rights Department (CRD) (formerly the Department of Fair Employment and Housing) to create and distribute statewide and regional media campaigns. These campaigns will serve as powerful tools to discourage discrimination, raise awareness, and promote unity throughout the Golden State.
